Ready, Set, Go Nate!

Our bikes have been perched on our back porch covered with a tarp since Christmas.  Jake moved everything out so that he would have some space to work on the Murphy bed.  Well, the weather has been getting nicer and the kids have been itching for some bike rides.
A couple of Saturday’s ago, the weather was great and Jake got to work on fixing up the bikes.  Nate saw his bike, which he has never really used, and he decided he needed to learn how to ride it.  When I came home from a soccer game, Nate was already somewhat of a pro.  As it stood after an hour or so of practice, Nate could totally ride his bike.  The trouble he has right now is braking.  It might take a bit for Nate to get used to that.  So we will not be going on any super long rides with him until we are sure that he has mastered everything about the bike.
When Corey was 4 ½, he learned to ride his bike.  He was a quick learner and he seemed to have it down.  We started taking him on longer rides and one day we almost lost him.  We were quite good about telling Corey exactly what he should do and warning him, but somehow, we still missed this one.  We were traveling down a steep street and we were headed for the curb.  Jake was in front of Corey and I was behind him.  We warned him about the curb, but instead of turning with the sidewalk, Corey flew out into a very busy intersection.  Jake and I felt truly blessed that day that there were no cars even around.  That street is always busy and cars travel 40 – 50 miles per hour.  Indeed, we truly felt like it was a miracle that Corey was not even touched during that experience.  We always tell him that Heavenly Father was really watching out for him that day and I completely believe that to be true.
So, I do not think we will be taking Nate on any big rides for a while.  In fact, we thought we might purchase one of those tag along bikes for Nate so that we can still do the longer rides with the family while he learns more about riding and doing it safely.
